PhD scholarship on atmospheric transport modelling of radionuclides

About the position

Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year position as PhD research fellow on the development and application of atmospheric dispersion models to be used in case of nuclear emergencies.

Model predictions of atmospheric dispersion of radioactive compounds are key input to Decision Support Systems (DSS) in the early phase of a nuclear emergency. The main aim of this PhD project is to improve the capabilities of modeling atmospheric transport of radioactive material and to exploit the benefits of using AI. It is foreseen that the outcome of the project will be applied in DSS employed in the Norwegian nuclear preparedness system.

The PhD candidate will be supervised both by a professor at MINA, NMBU, and by atmospheric transport modelers at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway). The PhD candidate will also work closely with other national and international NNRC partners.

The PhD position is funded by the Research Council of Norway through the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC),which is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between Norway’s leading institutions  within nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry research (https://www.nnrc.uio.no/english/research-themes/rt-5/): University of Oslo (UiO), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) as well as several associated partners including the Meteorological Institute (https://www.met.no).  The goal of the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre is to increase Norway's competence within the fields of nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry as well as applications within the fields of medicine, energy, and preparedness.

The applicant is made aware that an application for a PhD position at NMBU is at the same time an application for admission to a PhD programme at the institution. The documentation that is necessary to ensure that the admission requirements are met, must be uploaded as an attachment.

Main tasks

This is an open advertisement reflecting that we look for candidates that are interested in one or more of the following types of work tasks:

  • Adapt and develop cutting-edge high temporal and spatial resolution atmospheric dispersion models.
  • Exploit AI-technologies for prediction of radionuclide concentrations and depositions.
  • Compare and evaluate atmospheric dispersion models for application in emergency response systems in case of nuclear events.
  • Assess historical or hypothetical nuclear accidents.
  • Apply results from the dispersion modeling to Decisions Support Systems for nuclear emergency response systems.

The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.

Competence

The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year master’s degree. The applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies and be able to document proficiency in both written and oral English. For more detailed information on the admission criteria please see the PhD Regulations and the relevant PhD programme description.

The applicant must document expertise and interest in the research subject.

Required Academic qualifications

  • Master degree within meteorology, geophysics, physics, mathematics or computer science, which is preferably obtained within the last 5 years.

The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:

  • Experience within atmospheric modeling.
  • Experience in scientific programming and be familiar with working in High Performance Computing.
  • Experience with UNIX/LINUX, python, FORTRAN-90, version control, web services, handling of binary data formats, (e.g. grib, netcdf, hdf )
  • Experience in ML/AI.

You need to have:

  • Strong scientific capacity and analytical skills.
  • Good social and collaboration skills but also good ability to work independently.
  • Have oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language.
  • Strong motivation for the PhD education and for the research project.
