Postdoctoral fellow within Environmental Radioactivity/Radioanalytical Chemistry

About the position

Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has one to two vacant positions as Post Doctoral research fellows related to Environmental Radioactivity/Radioanalytical Chemistry. The positions are fixed term positions for two years, with possibility for extension of the fixed term for up to three years.

Knowledge on the behaviour of radionuclides in the environment is fundamental for the evaluation of their potential impact on humans and the environment. Such research is applicable to a wide range of challenges in nuclear sciences, including decommissioning and waste management, emergency preparedness, and assessment of new nuclear technologies.

We can offer one to two post-doctoral positions for candidates working in relevant research areas including: modelling of radionuclide transport or transfer; application of mass spectrometry to analysis of radionuclides; or environmental risk assessment of radionuclides. The successful candidate will be linked to the recently established Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC), which is a collaboration between UiO, NMBU and IFE (https://www.nnrc.uio.no/english/research-themes/rt-5/)

Main tasks

Candidates are expected to conduct their research within one or more of the following:

  • Development and application of models in emergency preparedness
  • Studies on factors (e.g., source term, speciation, environmental parameters) influencing the environmental transfer of radionuclides
  • Environmental impact assessment of decommissioning and radioactive waste management
  • Development and application of mass spectrometry (ICP-MS, AMS) to study radionuclide behaviour, including difficult to measure radionuclides
  • Participate in teaching and education.
  • Supervision of PhD and MSc students.

The main purpose of the post-doctoral position is to qualify for work in high-level scientific positions. The candidates to be employed will develop their own career development plan.

Competence

Required Academic qualifications

  • PhD within chemistry, physics or environmental sciences of relevance.

The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:

  • Background in environmental radioactivity and/or environmental chemistry
  • Technical competence in mass spectrometry (need not have previous experience of applications to radionuclides)
  • Experience with modelling and/or programming (e.g., geochemical, dispersion, environmental transfer, dose assessment)
  • Application of environmental impact assessment tools
  • Knowledge of challenges linked to decommissioning and/or waste management.
  • Number and quality of scientific publications.

You need to:

  • Have good communication skills, ability to establish new contacts and develop networks.
  • Have high working capacity, as well as interest and ability to work in teams.
  • Have ability to create a welcoming and productive working environment for colleagues and students.
  • Thrive in a multidisciplinary and international campus environment.
  • Have oral and written communication skills in English, and preferably in a Scandinavian language

Personal suitability will be given weight.
